[文摘] THE WORLD’S BIGGEST FOOD FIGHT

Tens of thousands of revellers pelted each other with tonnes of ripe tomatoes yesterday in a good old fashioned food fight, called ‘La Tomatina’. More than 40,000 men and women packed into Plaza Mayor square of Bunol in eastern Spain, armed with swimming goggles and a 120 tonnes of squashed tomatoes ready to throw at each other. The food fight lasted exactly one hour. After the festivities, fire hoses clean the streets. Fighters who were covered in tomato pulp were washed off by friendly locals with water hoses. Though the origins of the event are unclear, it is believed to have its roots in a food fight between childhood friends in 1945 in the city. Some say it began when tomatoes were thrown by residents angry at the city’s councilmen. Whatever its humble beginnings, the event is now an internationally recognized event.
