A Volunteer Day

Last Thursday I went to help a charity create a feature garden representing my employer. It is my second time to be a volunteer this year for my employer. Last time I went to a nursing home to teach senior people learn computer. I had very good time last time and very keen to do it again. I am very determined to become a handy man. Working in the garden will give me a fantastic opportunity to learn.

Before we started, we had a cup of coffee with the founder. The founder is a lady in her 50s.Her charity provides counselling to minimise suicide. They run an opportunity shop in front of the house to raise money. She found this charity 4 years ago after one of her sons committed suicide. Our task today is to create a feature garden in her shop's backyard. There are a few big things need to be done: put up a bamboo fence, create a centre piece, paving and painting. I decided to help paving to start with. It looks like an easy job but it took us almost half a day to finish paving about 8 square meters. After that I help other guys to put up the bamboo fence. I managed to drill a hole in the steel fence with an electrical tool. That was my first experience. After that I spent some time cleaning  the side lane of the house. The ladies look after the centre piece. The centre piece is composed of big block bricks. They paint them in purple. After the centre piece is finished, it looks really pretty. Nearly 5pm, the garden was looking good. The founder was very pleased with result. Before we left, she gave everyone a big hug.

Yesterday I got an email from her. She showed great appreciation for our hard work in the email. For me I feel I've achieved quite a lot. Particularly when you can help people and in the meantime you can learn new skills as well. The only problem is my back was so sort next day. Well I am really getting old and my body is going down the hill.
